Road Trip: Southeast
Day 2: Thursday, September 22, 2022 - Shenandoah NP
Day's statistics:
Weather: low 70s, misty in spots
Steps: Steve 4,758; Linda 3,524
Drove: 571 miles
We awoke, had breakfast, washed up, and were underway by 9:30.
Our first stop was at Shenandoah National Park. En route, we saw our first mountains of the trip.
We entered what was supposed to be the address for the park, and the GPS sent us to where we entered. But we were
about two miles past the enterance. While we COULD have just stopped when we got to the enterance we passed,
there are multiple enterances into the park and I thought the GPS was going to send us to another.
So we just turned around and went back to that enterance.
We have a Lifetime Pass to get into the parks, and at the entry booth, we got our NP stamp.
We stopped at a couple of the overlooks for pictures.
Our first stop was at the Swift Run overlook (this is a stitch of an almost 180° view).
Next was Bacon Hallow overlook (another stitch of an almost 180° view).
Last was Rocky Mount overlook. Not a stitch, but a view of below.
And a view of facing out (also not a stitch).
At this overlook, we left the painted rock that we found at the
Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge
in May of this year. Hopefully smeone will find it and continue the trend.
At the Bacon Hollow overlook, you can really see how dark the sky was. Shortly after leaving the Rocky Mount overlook, we hit a brief shower.
We left the park and continued on - not due to the rain, but rather we just wanted to see some views, and leave the rock.
On our way to Roanoke, we decided to stop at a Winery. This was a spontaneous stop. And the only winery
we stopped at this trip too (not for the lack of possibility).
We randomly stopped at Ecco Adesso, a winery at an
elevation of 1,580 feet.
The facility was a lodge-style building.
We did a tasting. We weren't too fond of most of the vintages, but that was possibly due to our illnesses.
The site had some REALLY nice views.
We departed - sober - and headed back on the highway to complete the day's journey.
We found the hotel, and checked in. At this point, it was dinner time.
Linda wanted to have soup for dinner, to help her feel a little better. So we stopped at Taste Of Asia,
a quick stop down the road from the hotel.
Linda ordered a bowl of hot and sour soup. But because that is deemed an appetizer, it was delivered first.
We didn't even think about getting a picture of it. She also ordered some dumplings.
I had the Lad Na, which is noodles and veggies with shrimp.
After dinner, we drove around town a little, then headed back to the hotel to relax and go to sleep.
Traveling while a little ill is a bit of a hinderance.
