Road Trip: South - inalnd trip
Day 3: Friday, May 22, 2015 - Tallahassee, FL
Weather: Low 80's. Partly cloudy.
Steps: 9,591 (Steve), 9,037 (Linda)
Drove: 290 miles
We woke up to a continental breakfast after which we headed out to the Tallahassee Museum. Alas, this wasn't for the usual viewing of ancient artifacts. Nope. This was going to be an outing with more advenures. Tree Top Adventures to be precise.
The TTA included three stages. Stage 1 was 20' up. Stage 2 started 40' up (mm hmm) and pretty much stayed there. Stage 3 started about 60' feet up (uh, yea...), but made its way lower (probably to about 30') due to all the zip lines. The inexpensive action camera I had wasn't able to capture everything (memory card size issues), but enough to show what we went through. The total adventure took almost three hours including short breaks between stages two and three, and a respit at the beginning of stage two while we each gathered the courage to proceed with the first step of the stage - a long zip over a building.
The camera was mounted to my head, so anywhere I looked, the camera looked too. If you have motion sickness issues, do NOT watch the full phases.
First Phase - which contained obsticles and zipping (Linda zips at 9:26, but that segment is pulled out separately below):
More of the First Phase:
Second Phase - which also contained obstacles and zipping (not perfecty aligned camera...):
One of Linda's zip lines (the only one captured):
The handy-dandy smartphone provided the rest of the video. From the ground.
Steve walking a tightrope.
Steve's long zip lline.
Linda only did the first two stages, but I, even though the first zip started at 60' up - and am afraid of hights (admittedly it is more of the fear of the fall) - went through the third and final stage. Afterward, I was glad Linda DIDN'T do the third leg because there were some very difficult challenges - including the Tall Man's Revenge that even I performed with difficulty.
While I was traversing the tree tops and practically putting my life in danger,
Linda yapped with our guide and took a couple pictures:
After we were done with our adventure, we ate lunch at the museum café. Our TTA guide, Laura, stopped by
for a bite to eat too, and Linda insisted I get a pic:
Afterward, we made our way out. En route, we came across the old Capital building from the car (at a red light):
We searched for a store to buy a souvenir shot glass. It took four tries but we finally got one. We made our way toward
our next destination - Atlanta - via Tifton. There was no real reason, especially since the GPS tried to have us go another
way. I thought it would be fastest and easiest to hop on i75 while the little computerized map was trying to have us take up
Route 33 first. It was a long drive. We stopped for dinner at a restaraunt called Smokey's Smokehouse (having since gone out
of business). The food was really good and the prices low but admittedly, our service left something to be desired (perhaps
it was the time of day [~4:00], but YMMV). This was probably tied for the best barbeque we had on vacatiion.
I had the
slab of ribs with sides of baked beans and cole slaw and Texas toast:
Linda had smoked turkey with sides of mac and cheese and cole slaw and Texas toast (yes, it is a little out of focus
[not my fault]):
We got some coffee (OK, Linda did - I only had a couple sips of hers) and continued on our way to Atlanta. We arrived late, again - though not nearly as late - and settled in.
