The South: 2011

Day 10: Saturday, November 19, 2011

Breakfast was good.

We made our way to Tredegar Irons Works (TIW).  It was, essentially, a cannon manufacturing facility during the Civil War (there I go again, sorry, the "Northern Aggression").

Some cannons.

Ammo - 4 types.
Shot: typical single ball.
Shell: has a fuse and blows up.
Case shot: has a fuse and blows up spewing smaller shots.
Canister: Much like a last-ditch effort shotgun type
(used as a last resort just before going hand to hand combat).

We also toured the American Civil War Center.  Alas, photography was prohibited again.  We viewed displays about the Civil War and how the slaves were involved.

A guide at TIW suggested we stop at "Extra Billies" to satisfy our last quest for barbeque.  We found "EB", but alas, it wasn't open until 5:00.  Behind the restaurant was this building.

It was lunch time and that was far too late.  A few hundred yards down the road we stumbled upon another restaurant called "Bill's Barbeque" (Bill must be popular Virginia name...).  This place was pretty good and reasonably priced.  I was going to order a full rack of ribs, but they didn't have enough.  I also couldn't order the half rack for the same reason. :-(  I was forced to go with the "Ribs & minced pork" (there were only three bones in this order).

After lunch we made our way to I-95. Sometime later we passed a billboard that read "Virginia Barbeque". Then we passed another billboard that read "Virginia Bazaar" and realized what the first sign really read. We decided to stop in for a bit and do some browsing. Alas, we were trying to prolong the inevitable as much as possible.

After our shopping detour, we headed back up I-95. There was an accident outside D.C. and we happen to be lucky enough to be able to take the HOV lane and made great time - comparitively, that is. After another couple hours, we finally arrived: home sweet home.
